Checkpoint Nation? Building Community Across Borders

Early one morning, Maria—then nine months pregnant—and her family were stopped by the police for no discernible reason. At one of the most intimate moments of her life, Maria found a team of immigration agents—not her husband—by her side. Maria’s chilling story is the centerpiece of this powerful documentary depicting the reality of harsh immigration laws and post-9/11 racial profiling. Set in the U.S./Mexico border area near Tucson, Arizona, a region that sees more and more migrant deaths every year, the video explores the way to move forward by building coalitions among diverse groups including ACLU of Arizona, Alliance for Educational Justice, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, Derechos Humanos, DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), Funding Exchange and VAMOS Unidos, complementing a Week of Action centered around the 10th anniversary of September 11th spearheaded by Rights Working Group. Watch “Checkpoint Nation? Shackled and Detained: A Pregnant Woman’s Story

Juana’s story is one of Breakthrough’s most shared and talked- about videos.

One day while driving in Tennessee — and while nine months pregnant — Juana was stopped for a supposed traffic violation (of which she was later cleared). Before she knew it, Juana, an immigrant from Mexico, found herself in jail awaiting possible detention. Then she went into labor — and to the hospital, without her family, to give birth in shackles. Mansimran: A Sikh Teenager Deals With Bullying

Meet Mansimran. He’s an 18 year old all-American guy who likes Starbucks, hoops, and robotics. He’s a student, an older brother, and an active member of his Sikh religious community. Sometimes, when strangers see his turban, and the color of his skin, they lean out their car window and call him a “terrorist.” He’s not alone: especially since September 11, Sikh Americans and other communities have become targets of discrimination, racial profiling and bullying, and hate crimes. How does Mansimran respond to the harassment? “Come over here, sit down, I’ll tell you about Sikhism, I’ll tell you who I am”. Such as when he spoke at the United Sikhs summit telling members of Congress to support human rights across cultures. DESERTED: The Human Rights Crisis On Our Soil

The remains of at least 6,000 migrants have been found in U.S. desert land since U.S.-Mexico border policies were implemented in the 1990s. Some groups estimate that for each set of remains recovered, those of 10 more people are lost to the harsh desert elements. Advocates and authorities attribute the escalating number of deaths not only to rising heat but also to ever-tightening border security forcing migrants into more remote and dangerous terrain. As we come up to United Nations’ International Migrants Day, we must recognize this human rights crisis that is taking place at our border. No matter your opinion on immigration reform, this is a crisis that all of us, as humans, are responsible for addressing – and ending. Mallika Dutt: The “war on women” is bigger than you think

Stories from around the country are revealing how recent laws such as Arizona’s SB 1070 and Alabama’s H.B. 56 are causing intense damage to families, communities and economies, with devastating consequences for immigrant women. These laws leave parents unable to protect their children. They force women to choose between the threat of an abusive husband and the threat of deportation if they call the police. They send pregnant mothers to give birth in shackles with federal agents by their side. As part of a delegation to Birmingham, Alabama with the We Belong Together campaign, Breakthrough president Mallika Dutt talks about the growing racial profiling and discrimination against immigrant communities and people of color.
